3rd May 2010: Glenavon 2 – 3 Larne Youth (Semi-Final NL Plate)
Scorers: Ryan McEvoy, Michael Corden
Final game of the season saw the Glenavon U14s get a chance to play at Mourneview Park against Larne Youth in the Semi-final of the National League Plate. We started with an attacking 3-4-3 formation in an attempt to press the ball and use the pace of Ryan, Michael and Colum to create chances up front. The atmosphere of the big pitch and the occasion led to a very nervous opening half for our players. We were taken by surprise early on with the pace and strength of the Larne strikers and gifted them 2 silly goals in the opening 12 minutes – the first was finished well into the corner after our defence was caught napping and the second was the result of a free kick which Matty somehow parried into the net. One thing we have found throughout the season in this league is that you will be punished if you don’t give 100% from the start of every game. Larne scored a third goal on 19 minutes with another move involving their front two which again was not dealt with by the Glenavon midfield and defence – both coaches looked mystified as to how easily Larne were cutting through our final third and an extra defender (Mark) was drafted in to help strengthen the back line. Larne could and really should have been 4 or 5 goals up after our dreadful start but we had a glimmer of hope just before half time when good interplay and strength involving Pearse, Michael and Ryan ended up with the ball being bundled over the line by Ryan for a consolation goal.
With real belief and encouragement from the coaches the second half started with Glenavon in dominant form as we pressed for a second goal. Pearse and Carter were now getting more possession in midfield allowing Colum the opportunity to provide some width and delightful crosses into the box. Defensively, Jordan, Tommy and Mark broke down every attack with Danny using his strength to clear any danger in the sweeper role. With Larne now on the back foot it was Glenavon who controlled the midfield and attack with Michael, Carter and Pearse now winning every tackle and spreading the ball. Our second goal arrived on 50 minutes with a great cross from Colum finding the head of Michael who directed the ball powerfully into the corner of the net. Larne were now shell-shocked by the dominance of Glenavon – Daryl was introduced on the left wing allowing Conor the ability to drift forward. For the final 20 minutes it was beyond comprehension how we never found an equaliser (Larne’s Goalkeeper was their Man of the match along with a resilient defence which threw bodies everywhere to block every shot). We had a series of chances to score before the finish with Michael’s effort skimming past the post, Daryl’s shot just drifting over the crossbar and Conor denied a certain penalty when he was fouled in the box.
A great finish to the season for the Glenavon players who gave everything in the second half and thoroughly enjoyed their experience on the Mourneview pitch. On the day a dreadful start was overturned in the second half to produce unquestionably the best performance of the season – both coaches had nothing but praise for the team at the final whistle.

17TH April 2010: Bertie Peacock Youths 0–1 Glenavon
Scores: Conor McClure
24th game of the season saw the Glenavon U14s travel to Coleraine to play Bertie Peacock Youth in a second National League fixture (11 am Kick Off). Unusual for Glenavon this season is we started the match in 4th or 5th gear and dictated the play with a more attacking 3-4-3 formation. With a strong back line of Tommy, Danny and Jordan it was important that Conor, Carter, Pearse and Mark control the midfield area and create chances for the strike force of Ryan, Michael and Colum. Matty stepped into the Goalkeeping role for only the 2nd game this season. We got off to a great start with only 6 minutes on the clock when Pearse and Carter combined well to release Colum on the right. He produced a great cross into the 18 yard area which was headed out to the feet of Conor who side-stepped a Peacock’s defender and struck a great ball into the roof of the net. Glenavon continued to press high up the field and Michael, Colum and Carter should have extended the lead with chances at close range.
Glenavon continued the high tempo into the second half with Daryl slotting into the left wing to hold up the ball and allowing Conor a chance to join Michael and Ryan in the attack. The only negative throughout the second half was our inability to add to the score-line. We had 80% of the play and Matty had only one crucial save throughout the match. Jordan, Danny and Tommy were excellent in defence with a determined Tommy courageously earning a head injury for his efforts. Credit also goes to Carter in Midfield for his vocal performance today in calling for every ball – something the whole team need to work at.
The 3 points were well deserved today against a pretty decent Bertie Peacock’s side that on the day also had a great defensive display on show. The Glenavon players showed that they can battle and play as a team when asked. Another clean sheet is a credit to our defence/midfield and Matty between the posts.
GLENAVON TEAM : Matthew Stevenson (GK), Thomas Turley, Jordan Lyttle, Daniel Wilson, Colum Toland, Daryl King, Pearse Magee, Carter Magee (Capt), Michael Corden, Conor McClure, Ryan McEvoy, Mark Moran.
10th April 2010: St Mary’s 1 – 0 Glenavon
23rd game of the season saw the Glenavon U14s travel to Mallusk in our second meeting of the season in the National League with St Mary’s – Saturday morning kick off (11 am). From our previous encounter we would need to be on our toes against what we found to a tricky side full of determination. With three matches over the Easter period Glenavon started the game with a few tired legs as St Marys bossed the early play – we were second to almost every ball but fortunately our back line of Matty, Danny, Jordan and Tommy were difficult to break through. Glenavon did create the better chances throughout the half with Michael and Conor getting clear one on one’s with the Keeper but their final touch let them down.
The second half continued with Glenavon in dominant form as we pressed for an opening goal. Pearse and Carter were now getting more possession in midfield allowing Daryl and Colum the opportunity to provide some width. Pearse and Carter surged forward on a couple of occasions and provided a series of balls to Michael, Conor and Mark but the St Mary’s defence was difficult to break through. St Mary’s broke the deadlock with 10 minutes remaining after a high ball was only pushed by Peter to the feet of the oncoming striker and he tapped in from close range. Glenavon continued to press forward for an equaliser and could have fallen further behind when a St Mary’s strike rattled the crossbar. In the dying minutes another refereeing decision cost us when a blatant penalty decision was given as a goal kick. A St Mary’s player foolishly went down in the 18 yard area faking an injury and the referee rightly let the play continue – Carter broke through for Glenavon in the attack which followed and was chopped down by the injured player – disbelief all round.
A harsh lesson was learned today in that we must give 100% from the first whistle of every game. One thing that is costing us dearly this season is our inability to finish chances.
GLENAVON TEAM : Peter Bergin (GK), Thomas Turley, Daniel Wilson, Matthew Stevenson, Colum Toland, Conor McClure, Daryl King, Pearse Magee, Carter Magee (Capt), Mark Moran, Michael Corden, Jordan Lyttle, Ryan McEvoy (Absent).
7th April 2010: Warrenpoint Town 0 – 1 Glenavon
Scores: Michael Corden
22nd game of the season saw the Glenavon U14s travel to Warrenpoint Town in our second meeting of the season in the National League (1 pm Kick Off). With pitch conditions a little soggy from the previous night’s rain it would be difficult to pass the ball, from experience a key feature of Warrenpoints’ game. We started the match by letting Warrenpoint dictate the play and backing off from any attack they created. We were second to every ball for the majority of the half with their extra player in midfield totally confusing our shape and ability to play. We could have been punished on a number of occasions but for the strength of Jordan, Danny, Tommy and Matty in defence. Peter was in good voice by both supporting the back four and being first to the ball when dealing with any danger. Our left and right wings were non existent and this forced Michael into helping out the midfield so we relied on the pace of Ryan in attack. The half ended in stalemate with the majority of play outside the final third for both teams. Glenavon had the better chances to open the scoring with Ryan and Michael failing to beat the keeper after using their strength and pace to beat the Warrenpoint back four.
After some stern words from the coaches at half time Glenavon upped the pace in the second half with a slight downhill advantage – the midfield partnership of Pearse and Carter began to gel and we were now getting the ball to Michael and Ryan to create problems up front. With a change in formation Conor was pushed up front with Daryl and Tommy getting the job of providing some width. Ryan was pushed to right wing to try and use his pace to cause problems. As the half progressed Glenavon now started to believe a breakthrough was close and they constantly pressed the ball with Pearse showing some excellent skill in pushing forward. The final 20 minutes was all Glenavon with Ryan’s determination to score resulting in a clash with the Warrenpoint keeper and a series of strong tackles inside the 18 yard area. The goal did arrive with 10 minutes remaining – a corner ball was defended with an upward header with the ball bouncing beside Daryl in the box. He managed to lob the ball back overhead and a header from Tommy landed at the feet of Michael who turned and struck the ball into the net with the Keeper only getting finger tips to the ball. Warrenpoint did try and press for any equaliser but Tommy and Jordan were excellent at the back with Carter and Pearse getting stronger in every tackle as the game progressed. Peter again showed good composure when required and is starting to work well with the defence.
A hard fought victory was well deserved today against a strong Warrenpoint side in a match which had a lot of drama on show for both sets of supporters. The players showed that they can battle and grind out a result when needed. Another clean sheet over the Easter period – let’s bring this performance into our next game.
GLENAVON TEAM : Peter Bergin (GK), Thomas Turley, Jordan Lyttle, Daniel Wilson, Matthew Stevenson, Colum Toland, Daryl King, Pearse Magee, Carter Magee (Capt), Michael Corden, Conor McClure, Ryan McEvoy. (Mark Moran – Absent)
3rd April 2010: Limavady Youths 0 – 2 Glenavon
Scores: Michael Corden, Ryan McEvoy
21st game of the season saw the Glenavon U14s travel to Limavady in the National League Plate with a Saturday morning kick off (11 am). A goal in each half was enough to progress in this competition although it could have been a different outcome had Limavady converted some of their early chances. As with a number of games this season we were very slow out of the blocks and for the first 15 minutes Limavady were first to every ball and exploited gaps in the Glenavon midfield. With Limavady shots drifting wide or not having enough power to trouble Peter, Glenavon took control for the remainder of the game. Pearse created the opening goal with a through ball to Michael inside the 18 yard area and his left strike flew straight into the bottom corner of the net. As the game progressed Glenavon grew in confidence and a solid back line of Matty, Danny, Jordan and Tommy broke down any Limavady attack with strong tackles and clearances.
The second half continued with Glenavon in dominant form as we pressed for a second goal. Michael and Ryan were creating a lot of problems for the Limavady defence with their strength and pace. Pearse and Carter were now controlling the midfield shape with Michael supporting any kick outs from the opposition. Limavady pressed in the second half for an equaliser with Jordan, Daryl and Tommy getting crucial headers in the last 15 minutes of the game. Colum, Mark and Conor also played their parts in using any advantage on the left and right wings and Peter grew in confidence as the game progressed with safe hands. Glenavon killed the game off on 55 minutes when Michael used his strength, and flicked a long ball onto Ryan who lobed the Keeper with the finish.
The players showed real character and belief in this game after a cautious start – we must give 100% from the first whistle of every match. Best on the day for Glenavon were Matty, Jordan, Michael and Ryan who worked tirelessly from start to finish. More important for the team was the win plus a rare clean sheet – hopefully something we can take into our next game.
GLENAVON TEAM : Peter Bergin (GK), Thomas Turley, Daniel Wilson, Matthew Stevenson, Colum Toland, Conor McClure, Daryl King, Pearse Magee, Carter Magee (Capt), Mark Moran, Michael Corden, Jordan Lyttle, Ryan McEvoy.
27th March 2010: Glenavon 1 – 2 Carniny Youth
20th game of the season saw the Glenavon U14s face Carniny Youth in the National League Cup with a Saturday morning kick off at Gordon Playing Fields, Lurgan (11 am). With a previous meeting in the League finishing in a draw this would be a stern test but to their credit Glenavon started the brightest controlling the early play and trying to pass the ball around. Michael and Conor were the target men up front and Danny and Jordan tried to find both with every defensive clearance. Michael was particularly effective with his strength causing the Carniny defence all sorts of problems and Glenavon produced all the early shots with the Carniny Keeper alert to any danger. Against the run of play Glenavon conceded with Carniny’s first real attack – a long ball which looked like an easy clearance for the defence left Peter hesitating to reach and ended up in the net. Glenavon to their credit continued to dominate and a “Man of the Match” performance from Michael soon found an equaliser when he slid the ball to Conor and he coolly drilled the ball into the corner of the net.
The second half continued to see Glenavon dictate the play with Matthew and Tommy excellent at right and left back. The Midfield of Carter, Pearse, Daryl and Colum lost their shape in the early stages with some players confused and failing to use any width on the pitch. Players need to get out of the habit of following the ball which leaves too much space for the opposition. Carniny took the lead for the second time with another soft goal – a high ball was only cleared to the feet of their striker and he easily finished with the defence failing to get near the shot. Glenavon changed formation to a 3-4-3 attack and the dominance saw the team do everything but equalise in the final 20 minutes of the game. Highlights of the half saw Michael lob the keeper with the wind preventing the ball crossing the line. Conor had a number of efforts which drifted wide or just over the crossbar. With 5 minutes left to play the pressure was relentless with the ball ricocheting everywhere but into the net.
At the final whistle both coaches and the majority of supporters thought the best team had lost today. With all the possession and play Glenavon had we were punished with two silly mistakes. This season taking our chances has cost us dearly but a lot of credit goes to the players’ attitude on the pitch today and if we continue to play like that we should have a good end to the season.
GLENAVON TEAM : Peter Bergin (GK), Thomas Turley, Jordan Lyttle, Daniel Wilson, Matthew Stevenson, Colum Toland, Daryl King, Pearse Magee, Carter Magee (Capt), Mark Moran, Michael Corden, Conor McClure. (Ryan McEvoy – Absent)
20TH March 2010: Carrick Rangers 1 – 1 Glenavon
19th game of the season saw the Glenavon U14s face Carrick Rangers for a second time with a Saturday morning kick off at Beltoy, CarrickFergus (11 am). The first half saw Glenavon with a strong wind in their favour so we needed to take advantage by piling on the pressure from the off. Michael and Conor were the target men up front so it was crucial that Carter and Pearse control the midfield and use Mark and Ryan to provide width and danger in the final third. After a cagey first 15 minutes we began to push forward with Danny and Jordan leading from the back helped by Tommy and Matty. Our domination was rewarded on 22 minutes when Ryan was upended in the box after good combination play from Michael with Carter converting the resulting penalty. The opening goal sparked several more chances for Glenavon before the break with Conor having two glorious chances to score one on one with the Keeper. Both times he tried a delicate chip or tried to be too precise with the finish, the ball drifting wide. Peter had only a few saves to make throughout the half with the Carrick midfield being their only threat with a few wayward shots from distance.
With the wind in Carrick’s favour we began the second half trying to hold on to our lead and hoping Michael and Conor could finish some of the numerous chances we were creating up front. One thing that was blatant throughout the match was the number of poor refereeing decisions that in truth cost us three points on the day. Every counter-attack we made resulted in an offside decision and there were a number of free kicks awarded which left both coaches scratching their heads. With ten minutes to go Carrick were awarded a soft corner which was scrambled over the line at the near post for an undeserved equaliser.
The only negative the players can take out of this game is that we need to be more accurate when taking our chances but on the day Glenavon did more than enough to get the three points but for the performance of Carricks’ 12th Man – the referee. This match only highlights the need for neutral refereeing at all levels.
GLENAVON TEAM : Peter Bergin (GK), Thomas Turley, Daniel Wilson, Matthew Stevenson, Colum Toland, Conor McClure, Daryl King, Pearse Magee, Carter Magee (Capt), Mark Moran, Michael Corden, Jordan Lyttle, Ryan McEvoy.
13th March 2010: Glenavon 2–3 Chimney Corner
18th game of the season saw the Glenavon U14s contest a second fixture against Chimney Corner in this campaign with a Saturday Morning kick off at Lord Lurgan (11 am). We reverted to a 4-4-2 formation with Tommy in partnership with Michael at centre-back, Daryl out on the left and Mark at right back. The midfield saw Carter (Capt) combine with Jordan, using the pace of Pearse on the right wing with Colum starting out on the left. A welcome return saw Ryan McEvoy start as our target man up front along with Conor. A huge thank you goes to Peter Bergin who stepped up from the U13s to make his debut as goalkeeper.
The first half saw Glenavon begin very slowly out of the blocks with Chimney Corner dictating the early play and their players first to every ball with us relying on long ball clearances and well timed tackles from Carter, Jordan, Michael and Tommy in breaking down any attack. Chimney Corner had a slight wind advantage throughout the half and opened the scoring on 22 minutes when a resulting corner was cleared to midfield and with the next attack our left hand side was exposed resulting in a shot into the corner of the net. The goal seemed to spark a bit of life into Glenavon and for the remainder of the half we applied the majority of pressure with Ryan causing all sorts of problems for the Chimney corner defence with his strength and speed. On 28 minutes a through ball found Ryan and he outsmarted the last defender and finished well one on one with the keeper.
With the wind in Glenavon’s favour we needed to keep the momentum going in the second half but the opposite happened. Within a couple of minutes Chimney Corner took the lead again when their first attack ended up with the ball in the net after a fluke shot or cross saw the ball somehow lob into the top corner giving Peter no chance. Glenavon were shell shocked for the next twenty minutes and allowed Chimney Corner to pass the ball at ease with their midfield and right wing causing us all sorts of problems with every attack. Our positioning and shape was all over the place with most players chasing the ball and we give Chimney Corner a simple third goal on 55 minutes with a well worked finish which started on the left wing and cut open our defence. Peter was called into action on several occasions in the second half with Chimney corner denied by the cross-bar, and by throwing his body in front of the ball. Glenavon had a 10 minute spell before the final whistle where the players did roll their sleeves up and dig in with some decent tackling and possession – the pressure paying off when Ryan used his pace again to beat the last defender and a shot across goal was bundled over the line by Conor.
Overall, the result reflected what we deserved today with the majority of players out of sorts – something the coaches need to rectify going into our next game.
GLENAVON TEAM : Peter Bergin, Thomas Turley, Colum Toland, Conor McClure, Daryl King, Pearse Magee, Carter Magee (Capt), Mark Moran, Michael Corden, Jordan Lyttle, Ryan McEvoy, (Matthew Stevenson, Daniel Wilson) – Absent
13th February 2010: Glenavon 3–1 Carrick Rangers Colts
17th Game of the season saw the Glenavon U14s return to the League campaign with a Saturday Morning game at Kernan pitches, Portadown (11 am Kick off). Due to some players being on holiday we were forced into playing this game with ten men so it was asking a lot both physically and mentally as to whether everyone could step up to the task. We used a 4-4-1 formation with Tommy in partnership with Danny at centre-back, Daryl out on the left and Mark at right back. The midfield saw Carter (Capt) combine with Pearse, giving Colum a start on the right wing with Conor out on the left. Michael Corden would be our target man up front and a huge thank you goes to Matthew Stevenson for stepping into a debut goalkeeping role at short notice.
The first half saw Glenavon begin the game a little cagey with some players adjusting to unfamiliar positions as we tried to push forward. We dictated the early play with Michael holding up the ball well and bringing Conor and Colum into the game. Carter and Pearse were excellent in midfield winning any physical battles and preventing Carrick from making use of their extra player. At the back, Daryl worked the ball well to Conor out on the left wing and Danny, Tommy and Mark completed a solid back four with both Tommy and Danny rotating the sweeper role. Glenavon got a deserved break through on 20 minutes when the pressure from midfield saw Pearse use his pace to get into the 18 yard area and finish into the top corner with a confident strike. On 25 minutes we got a second goal when Conor worked a great pass and move with Michael and then skilfully slotted the ball into the right corner of the net. Glenavon were now in total control and a series of efforts from Conor, Michael, Carter and Pearse should have added to the goals but for the Carrick Keeper. With Glenavon pushing up the field so much Carrick did produce a great move just before half time when a through ball found their midfielder and he gave Matty no chance with a strong finish.
The second half continued to see Glenavon dominate and control the play with a third goal early on sealing the points on the day. Michael and Conor were causing all sorts of problems for the Carrick Rangers defence and great interplay from Daryl and Carter gave Conor a through ball and he coolly finished one on one with the keeper. Carrick Rangers did play some decent football throughout the half but with Matty always first to every ball and producing some notable saves Glenavon were very difficult to break through with the ten men working as a unit for the 35 minutes. Tommy, Danny, Mark and Daryl were always quick to break down any attack with Carter, Pearse and Colum playing both a holding and attacking role in midfield. On the day both Michael and Conor (Joint “Man of the Match”) created enough chances up front to get 6 or 7 goals with the Carrick keeper playing his part or shots going astray.
Overall, to put in a performance like that for 70 minutes with only TEN men against any team in this League deserves an enormous amount of credit and both coaches applaud every player on the pitch today.
GLENAVON TEAM : Matthew Stevenson, Daniel Wilson, Thomas Turley, Colum Toland, Conor McClure, Daryl King, Pearse Magee, Carter Magee (Capt), Mark Moran, Michael Corden, Jordan Lyttle (absent).
5th February 2010: Chimney Corner 1 – 0 Glenavon
16th Game of the season saw the Glenavon U14s return to the League campaign with a Friday evening game at Ballymena Showgrounds (7.30 pm Kick off). With Jake returning to the back line in partnership with Danny, Glenavon started this match with Matty at right back and Tommy on the left. The midfield saw Carter (Capt) combine with Pearse and Nathan getting a start on the right wing with Daryl out on the left. Conor and Jordan provided our striking options with Michael Corden deserving a lot of praise for stepping into the goalkeeping role at short notice.
With poor pitch conditions on a cold evening this would turn out to a cagey game with both sides finding it difficult to get any fluid passing or control on the ball. The first half highlights amounted to a free kick from Conor which drifted wide of the post and several shots off target by Jordan, Pearse and Carter which were more hit and hope than any real threat on goal. Michael was called into action on two occasions when he managed to flick a powerful shot from Chimney Corner over the crossbar and break down an attack outside the 6 yard box with a well timed tackle. Glenavon had the majority of possession throughout the half and really should have converted several chances from pin point corner crosses by Conor – the one thing that let us down on the night was our belief in finding the net. We were forced into two changes before half time with Daryl and Matty limping off through injury to be replaced by Colum and Mark.
Chimney Corner started the second half in a different gear with more hunger and belief than Glenavon who at times looked exhausted and paid the price on 50 minutes. Our solid defence was caught napping and a clever through ball give their striker too much space and time to finish well into the right corner of the net. For the final 20 minutes of the half Glenavon did regroup and showed some great individual skill at times by Colum, Pearse, Carter and Mark but on the day Chimney Corner had got their advantage and played ten men behind the ball with their striker on hand for any break away moves. It was going to take something special or an error to get us back into this match but although we got through on goal a number of times that final shot always let us down.
Glenavon players need to believe in their ability to work as a team and realise that we are not going to win games in this league by relying on one or two players. For 70 minutes we need to show strength in every area of the pitch with a battling attitude from start to finish.
GLENAVON TEAM : Daniel Wilson, Thomas Turley, Jordan Lyttle, Nathan Thompson, Matthew Stevenson, Colum Toland, Conor McClure, Daryl King, Pearse Magee, Carter Magee (Capt), Mark Moran, Michael Corden, Jake Richardson, Eoghan Lambert (absent).
30th January 2010: Glenavon 2–3 Donegal Celtic (NIBFA Cup)
15th Game of the season saw the Glenavon U14s face Donegal Celtic in a 1.00 pm kick off at Mallusk in our second outing in the NIBFA Cup. With Jake absent from the back line Glenavon started the match with Danny and Tommy as centre-backs along with Mark at right back and Michael on the left. The central midfield saw Carter (Capt) continue his partnership with Jordan and Pearse moving to the right wing with Daryl out on the left. Eoghan and Ryan began in attack.
The first half saw Glenavon start with confidence and a belief in taking the game to the opposition. We dictated the play throughout and pushed forward with Pearse, Mark and Jordan combining well down the right wing and giving Ryan the space and time to create problems up front. The Glenavon back line proved difficult to penetrate with Michael, Tommy, Danny and Mark dealing with any threat Donegal Celtic created. We opened the scoring on 21 minutes with the Glenavon pressure paying off when Jordan hit a shot which the keeper fumbled and the ball ending up trickling over the line. Donegal Celtic huffed and puffed a bit after this but Eoghan Lambert had only one real shot on target to deal with during the first 35 minutes. We should have took more advantage in the first half in adding to the score with Ryan, Eoghan, Daryl and Carter getting shots on target but with not enough venom to beat the keeper.
The second half changes saw Pearse (“Man of the Match”) pushed up front to try and kill the game off with Nathan introduced on the right wing, Conor out on the left and Matty coming on at right back on fifty minutes. The changes seemed to unsettle the Glenavon formation allowing Donegal Celtic more of the ball and for the first time in the game the upper-hand in midfield. They equalised on 40 minutes when a lapse of concentration from Eoghan saw a fine save somehow end up in the corner of the net. Glenavon, who had been in total control up to this point, had a ten minute spell when players’ heads dropped and doubt started to creep into the game. Donegal Celtic grabbed a second on 50 minutes when a routine corner should have been cleared with the unmarked header giving Eoghan Lambert no chance.
Defensive errors gave Donegal Celtic a third goal on 55 minutes when the midfield and centre backs were both beaten by some slick movement on the ball and a fine finish. It could have been four soon after but for a wonderful save from Eoghan. Following this, the Glenavon players sparked a come back for the last 15 minutes of the game, with more of a battling attitude on display particularly from Jordan and Carter in midfield. Conor and Eoghan Hamill were getting more of the ball on the left wing and some pin point pressure passing allowed Eoghan to cleverly tackle the last defender close to the corner flag and grab a second goal for Glenavon by beating the keeper at his near post. It was now ALL Glenavon with time running out – Matty, Nathan and Pearse created some excellent moves down the right. We had a goal mouth scramble in the final minutes with Carter, Michael, Pearse and Danny seeing shots blocked and the ball ricocheting everywhere but into the net.
On the balance of play both coaches couldn’t fault the players battling attitude today – the first half we totally dominated the game and showed real character when we looked as if the match was beyond our reach. Tactically I think we as coaches got a few things wrong today. We need to take heart from our overall display and can count ourselves very unlucky to be exiting the NIBFA Cup at this stage.

23rd January 2010: Glenavon 1 – 1 Bertie Peacock Youth
14th Game of the season saw the Glenavon U14s face Bertie Peacock in an 11.00 am kick off at Gordon Playing fields in our first competitive League match since 28th November after a long spell of cancelled fixtures due to the winter weather conditions. Glenavon started the match with Michael and Jake as centre-backs along with Nathan at right back and Daryl on the left. The central midfield saw Carter continue his partnership with Jordan and Mark getting a deserved start on the right wing with Tommy on the left. Eoghan and Pearse began in attack.
The first half Glenavon had the vast majority of the ball and controlled all the early play. We were solid at the back but tended to nervously hoof the ball up front or out of play. The lack of games could prove to be a key factor in this match but an early goal from Nathan, who lobbed the ball over the 6 foot Peacock’s Keeper on the 18th minute, would hopefully settle any nerves. We could have been TWO up soon after with Nathan combining well with Mark and Pearse down the right wing and the ball falling nicely to Carter with his strike rattling the crossbar. Another great move started out on the left with a neat pass from Daryl finding the feet of Eoghan who played Tommy into space with only the Keeper to beat – unfortunately his final touch couldn’t test the Keeper.
The second half saw a number of changes at various stages to protect and try to add to our slender lead. Conor McClure (making his debut) and Matthew formed a left wing partnership with Colum up front and Ryan out on the right wing. As the half progressed Glenavon never really looked in any danger as Bertie Peacock relied heavily on their Keeper and back four on a number of occasions. We had a series of chances throughout the half with Pearse and Carter (joint “Man of the Match”) showing some great tackling and control on the ball. We showed in patches that training is starting to pay off with some delightful one-twos from Matthew, Conor, Colum, Carter and Pearse but finishing or getting that final shot proved to be our downfall. We had a number of scrambled efforts in and around the goal mouth, the best of which was when Colum found space with 15 minutes to play and a one on one with the keeper saw the save of the match. Shortly after Bertie Peacock produced their move of the game with a counter attack down the right hand side which caught our defence off guard and left Eoghan with no chance from a great strike into the left corner of the net.
Both coaches were pleased with the performance today – particularly with such a long spell without a game. Eoghan Lambert was a spectator for 90% of the match. We need to take our chances in future if we are to get all three points in this league.

5th December 2009: Red Star 0-3 Glenavon (NIBFA Cup)
13th Game of the season saw the Glenavon U14s face Red Star in an 11.00 am kick off at the Billy Neill Centre in our first outing in the NIBFA Cup. We needed a quick response from the players to turnaround a poor all round performance from our previous league game. With Jake back from injury he began the match with Michael supporting him in defence along with Nathan and Tommy. The central midfield saw Carter (with a promotion to the role of Captain) paired with Jordan and Pearse on the right wing and Daryl on the left. Eoghan and Danny formed a rare partnership up front.
The match took the usual 10 minute spell before Glenavon were able to settle on the ball. We were stronger in the tackle in the early exchanges with Jake and Nathan (joint ‘Man of the Match’) excelling on the back line but we needed an early goal to bring composure to the game. On 16 minutes we got our opening when a penalty was awarded for persistent fouling on Eoghan in the box. He coolly dispatched the spot kick into the corner of the net. We had a real scare soon after when Red Star had probably their best move of the match to find their forward free in the 18 yard area but thankfully the shot drifted over the crossbar. Glenavon started to take control for the remainder of play and the confidence was starting to show when Nathan started a series of moves down the right wing with Pearse and Carter linking well with Danny – who scored a second goal on 24 minutes with a confident finish after a pin point pass from Jake.
The second half saw Glenavon continue to dominate with Matty replacing Daryl at left back allowing Tommy the opportunity down the left wing to drive forward and create chances up front. Colum came on for Danny who replaced Michael at full back and Mark replaced Pearse on the right wing. Both substitutes had an immediate impact with Nathan repeatedly using his pace on the wing and Mark supplying a wonderful cross into the box which was turned in at the near post after some clever footwork from Colum. Glenavon were rampant in the final 20 minutes with Tommy doing well with a headed effort and long range shot both drifting wide. Ryan was introduced on the left wing and he showed wonderful skill on the turn with a volley that struck the crossbar. We had further opportunities to add to the score before the finish with Glenavon creating a host of great passing moves in the final third.
Both coaches were more than pleased with the performance today. It was great to see another clean sheet in a match where Eoghan Lambert was more of a spectator. The team are displaying more confidence as the season progresses. Let’s hope we have a good cup run as the players turn their attention to the next league fixture.

28th November 2009: Ards Youth 7-0 Glenavon
12th Game of the season saw the Glenavon U14s face League Leader’s Ards Youth in a 10.30 kick off at Dairyhall. With almost 4 weeks without any competitive football we would need to give 110% in our performance against an Ards Youth team who were on an unbeaten run from the 26th September. On a frosty morning the match began with Glenavon continuing a now settled 4-4-2 formation. With Jake missing through injury, Nathan, Danny, Jordan and Tommy started in defence supported in midfield by Michael, Carter, Pearse (Capt) and Ryan with Eoghan and Colum as attackers. Eoghan Lambert would need to be at his best against an Ards team who are scoring goals for fun at the moment.
The first fifteen minutes were crucial in a game that needed Glenavon to remain calm, hold our shape, be first to every tackle and try to play some of the routine training ground passing and movement which would help trouble the Ards defence. What we couldn’t afford was to allow Ards time on the ball and research showed us that they have a solid centre back pairing plus a number of strong playmakers in midfield with a striker who punished us badly in a previous friendly game. Ards Youth opened the scoring with their first real strike on target – we were cut open through the midfield and a good finish hit the roof of the net. The pace and power of 4 or 5 players in the Ards team were causing major problems all over the pitch for Glenavon – we were chasing the game throughout the match with Ards creating simple combination play and their striker’s pace and determination resulting in a score of 3-0 with a quarter of the match played. The Glenavon coaches tried to shore up the defence and midfield with a number of tactical changes on the pitch which steadied the ship for a brief period and helped to create our only real chance in the first half but this was dealt with confidently by the Ards Goalkeeper. Truthfully, we were humiliated on the day with Ards punishing us with a further 3 goals before half time – the final goal an attempted sliding clearance which was pushed into the net.
The second half began with several changes in a game which was effectively over as a contest. Daryl, Mark and Matthew were introduced to help contain Ards and prevent a score line getting to double figures. Glenavon did play some good passing moves with Mark showing great strength on the right wing with Carter and Pearse, now in a striker’s role. Carter and Daryl showed exactly what was needed against Ards with a number of crunch well timed tackles on display – something which was badly lacking in the first half. We had a number of chances for a consolation goal in a good twenty minute spell in the half with Pearse and Eoghan creating a number of good strikes on target – unfortunately the Ards Goalkeeper was on hand to deal with any danger. As is always the problem with pushing for any opportunity we conceded a further goal before the finish when a corner ball was headed into the net with our defence caught napping.
In Summary, Ards Youth taught us a real lesson in simple, competitive football on the day with some well worked moves and clinical finishing. We need to work as a unit for this type of game with a team spirit from start to finish. Every player on the field needs to step up a gear if we are to challenge the top teams in this League.
GLENAVON TEAM : Eoghan Lambert, Thomas Turley, Jordan Lyttle, Daniel Wilson, Nathan Thompson, Matthew Stevenson, Colum Toland, Daryl King, Pearse Magee (Capt), Carter Magee, Mark Moran, Michael Corden, Ryan Sullivan, Eoghan Hamill, Jake Richardson (injured)
31st October 2009: Glenavon 0-0 St Mary’s
11th Game of the season saw the Glenavon U14s face St Mary’s in an 11’o clock kick off at the Gordon Playing Fields. On a sunny Halloween morning the match began in perfect conditions with Glenavon continuing the now settled 4-4-2 formation. Matthew, Daniel, Jake and Tommy started in defence supported in midfield by Michael, Carter, Pearse (Capt) and Ryan with Eoghan and Jordan making a debut up front. Eoghan Lambert made a welcome return between the posts.
From kick off we could see that St Mary’s were up for a battle, relying heavily on a solid back four and using 5 players across the midfield constantly trying to use both wingers to their advantage. Glenavon were very slow out of the blocks and were a bit shocked at how well organised St Mary’s could play with their hunger for the ball and strong tackling giving us all sorts of problems. We relied heavily on long balls and clearances to try and find Jordan and Eoghan up front. Throughout the half we had about 80% possession but it was a case of running out of ideas on how to break through the St Mary’s defence with a confident keeper always first to any breaking balls. Glenavon’s only real shots on target came from a couple of free kicks – the best of which was struck sweetly by Jake forcing the St Mary’s keeper into a fine finger tipped save which was pushed over the crossbar. Ryan out on the right wing worked well with Jordan who tried to hold up the play and create chances for Carter and Pearse in Midfield. Michael on the left wing tried to combine with Eoghan but any attack was quickly broke down by a solid St Mary’s defence and confident keeper. Glenavon’s dominance in the first half was highlighted by the fact that Eoghan Lambert had no real saves to make.
The second half began with several changes to try and break the stalemate. Daryl, Mark, Nathan and Colum were introduced at various stages to help create chances. Glenavon did play some passing moves with Nathan doing well on the right wing with Carter and Daryl combining with Eoghan and Jordan down the left to try and break through the St Mary’s defence. We still relied heavily on the long/high ball, failing to play any basic football moves – something which is worked on in every training session. The best moments of the half for Glenavon were goal mouth scrambles from a couple of corner kicks which we couldn’t take advantage off and a series of free kicks which were easily dealt with. St Mary’s had a couple of gilt edge chances to win the game in the final 10 minutes – our defence had lost its concentration with the keeper nearly beaten twice from close range.
In Summary, a frustrating day for both coaches with no real desire, belief, hunger or teamwork from the players costing us on the day. In truth we were lucky to come away with a point. The only positive coming from the game is our first clean sheet of the season.

24th October 2009: Maiden City 1-5 Glenavon
10th Game of the season saw the Glenavon U14s face Maiden City in an 11’o clock kick off at Eglinton. With a strong wind and a persistent drizzle the match began with a continued 4-4-2 formation Mark, Daniel, Jake and Daryl started in defence supported in midfield by Tommy, Carter, Jordan and Nathan with Eoghan and Pearse (Capt) providing the attacking options. Michael Corden for the second week running took the keeper’s Jersey in the absence of Eoghan Lambert.
The match started with both teams battling with the conditions and for the opening 15 minutes it was a case of long ball tactics from Glenavon in trying to use the wind advantage in finding our front two – with most attempts resulting in the ball travelling too far. Any significant ball work was played down the right wing with Nathan pushing forward and finding a lot of space – he almost produced an opening goal with a clever shot which skimmed off the top of the net. Maiden City were up for the challenge in the opening exchanges and had several shots on target which thankfully Michael was on hand to deal with – one particular save pushing the ball over the crossbar. In an eagerness to push forward and create chances Glenavon were exposed too often in the centre and down the left wing as we had forgotten the basic rule of keeping our positions on the pitch. The opening goal on 17 minutes would help settle the team – Tommy, Eoghan and Nathan causing havoc in the 18 yard area and Pearse bullying the ball over the line. Maiden City to their credit maintained the pressure after the goal and had several chances to equalise with their midfield winning a lot of the ball and their front two getting a lot of room in the final third of the pitch – Michael coming to the rescue with a safe pair of hands. Maiden City did have the ball in the net from a free kick set piece but their effort was correctly ruled offside. Glenavon got a 2nd goal before half time when a through ball from Daryl found prolific striker Eoghan who beat the last defender and rounded the keeper to angle a delicate ball into the corner of the net.
The second half began with several changes to balance the midfield & stabilise the defence. Jordan moved to centre back and Tommy moved to left back – Pearse dropped back to midfield alongside an inspirational Carter with Ryan Sullivan, Matthew Stevenson and Colum Toland introduced to help create chances to close out the game. This was to have the effect we needed with Ryan working well out on the left with Eoghan and some decent passing between Pearse, Carter and Nathan in midfield. We got our 3rd goal on 42 minutes when Eoghan combined well with Ryan on the left wing to out muscle the last defender and square the ball across the box for Colum who was alert to tap in from close range. We allowed Maiden City an easy chance to get one back moment’s later when a mix up in the Glenavon defence saw the saved ball from Michael rebound off Tommy and fall to the striker for a simple score. This led to some scary moments for Glenavon and had Maiden City pulled a second goal back we could have been in trouble. The opposite happened when on 55 minutes some sublime skill and tackling from Nathan on the right wing saw his shot hit the roof of the net to make it 4-1 and effectively end the game as a contest. For the final 15 minutes it was all Glenavon with Eoghan getting his second goal on 62 minutes – deservedly so for his battling attitude and brilliant feet which the Maiden City back line found menacing on the day. Joint man of the match goes to Carter for his crunch tackles and dominance in midfield and Eoghan in attack who on another day could have scored 4 or 5 goals.
Overall another excellent team performance which pleases both coaches – the players should now have a belief that they can cope with any opposition in this league – the only negative is that we need to concentrate for 70 minutes and keep our shape going into the next game.
GLENAVON TEAM : Eoghan Lambert (absent), Thomas Turley, Jake Richardson, Jordan Lyttle, Daniel Wilson, Nathan Thompson, Matthew Stevenson, Colum Toland, Daryl King, Pearse Magee (Capt), Carter Magee, Mark Moran, Michael Corden, Ryan Sullivan, Eoghan Hamill
17th October 2009: Glenavon 2-2 Carniny Youth
9th Game of the season saw the Glenavon U14s face league Leader’s Carniny Youth in a 12.15 pm kick off at Mallusk. On a sunny autumn afternoon the Glenavon line up changed to a more organised 4-4-2 formation. Our defence started with Daryl King, Jake Richardson, Daniel Wilson and Mark Moran supported in midfield by Thomas Turley, Carter Magee, Jordan Lyttle and Nathan Thompson with Eoghan Hamill and Pearse Magee (Capt) providing the attacking options. Michael Corden deserves a lot of praise after again deputising for Eoghan Lambert between the posts.
From Kick-off it was clear that Glenavon were showing a more determined attitude and looked organised in every area of the pitch. Something unusual this season is that we were the quickest team to settle, always first to the ball, to every tackle and broke down any attack from Carniny Youth with ease. For 35 minutes Carniny didn’t get out of the blocks and they tried the long ball as their only threat. Without doubt this was the best half of football we have played this season and we got our first goal on 17 minutes after a through ball from Daryl found Tommy on the left wing and he produced a one-two with Eoghan to find the net with a right footed finish almost knocking him off-balance. We were two up on 24 minutes when Jake powered through from centre back to open up the Carniny midfield and find Eoghan who managed to leave the keeper entangled with a Carniny defender to coolly slot home into the right corner of the net. We had opportunities to and should have extended the lead before half time with Pearse, Tommy, Nathan, Jordan, Carter and Eoghan causing all sorts of problems for the Carniny midfield and defence.
For the first ten minutes of the second half we again had chances to kill the game off with Carniny relying on mistakes in our play to get back into the game. With a couple of strong substitutions Carniny did apply pressure in the last 25 minutes of the game and were awarded a couple of debatable free kicks in dangerous areas. The first of these was cleverly dealt with by the Glenavon defence after the ball ended up in the net with the referee reacting in our favour to several players clearly in an offside position. Carniny did get a goal back on 54 minutes when a corner was floated in to the 18 yard area and the ball was cleared by the Glenavon defence who trying to play the offside trap for a second time saw the resulting shot fired into the net. Both coaches and spectators believed the goal shouldn’t have counted but the referee thought otherwise. This decision gave Carniny Youth a belief in getting something out of the game and Glenavon introduced substitutes Ryan McEvoy and Ryan Sullivan to create problems on the right wing and use fresh legs with Eoghan, who had another impressive game, making way. We were still battling for every ball and played the more attractive and dangerous football in the second half. Ryan had a couple of surging runs together with Pearse and Tommy and should have added to the score line but pressing for a third gave Carniny Youth a chance on the break with their striker cleverly dummying our last defender and equalising with a fine finish into the top corner with 67 minutes gone.
Both coaches had nothing but praise for the team at full time – for the first time this season we are starting to gel as a team with every player getting a deserved 9 out of 10 for their performance. There was clear disappointment on the players faces that we didn’t get 3 points today but let’s take this performance into the next game.
GLENAVON TEAM : Eoghan Lambert (absent), Thomas Turley, Jake Richardson, Daniel Wilson, Nathan Thompson, Matthew Stevenson, Colum Toland, Daryl King, Pearse Magee (Capt), Ryan McEvoy, Carter Magee, Mark Moran, Michael Corden, Ryan Sullivan, Eoghan Hamill, Jordan Lyttle
10th October 2009: Foyle Harps 4-1 Glenavon
8th Game of the season saw the Glenavon U14s face Foyle Harps in a 12 o’clock kick off after a two hour journey to Leafair Park, Derry. Our defence started with Thomas Turley, Jake Richardson, Daniel Wilson and a debut for Nathan Thompson supported in midfield by Eoghan Hamill, Carter Magee, Pearse Magee, Matthew Reynolds (Capt) and Ryan McEvoy with Michael Corden getting a chance as the main target man. With this line up we expected a lot of pace from Eoghan and Ryan on the left and right wings in supplying Michael up front. We needed our midfield trio to dominate from the start and for the opening ten minutes we had the upper hand in terms of possession and breaking down any attack. Foyle Harps relied heavily on the long ball and their tall striker in the final third had the pace and physical presence to constantly trouble our back four. He created the opening two goals when he firstly slotted home after beating our midfield and defence through strength and skill – he then set up the second goal with our defence stretched once again and created a simple tap in with a wonderful ball across the 6 yard area. With Glenavon shell shocked into losing two goals so cheaply our concentration levels and any form of team performance disappeared.
The second half needed a major spark from somewhere on the pitch and both coaches thought a change in formation to a more familiar 4-4-2 would help. Daryl King, Colum Toland, Mark Moran, Matthew Stevenson & Ryan Sullivan were introduced at various stages but in truth it was too late to alter the score line with Glenavon second best in all areas – against a team like Foyle Harps you need to compete for every ball, be strong and make every tackle count. We were 3-0 down on 45 minutes when caught out of position our defence failed to deal with a routine shot and the follow up after a scramble in the 18 yard area hit the target. We got a consolation goal on 54 minutes when Eoghan Hamill converted a deserved penalty after some great work on the left wing involving Daryl, Michael and Eoghan saw the striker tripped in the area. Foyle Harps added to their tally with five minutes remaining as Glenavon pressed for a second but again we were left exposed at the back and some sloppy play saw the ball find the net.
Best on the day for Glenavon were Carter Magee and Mark Moran who showed what this league is about in terms of fighting for every ball, trying to hold their position and tracking the opposition. Unfortunately unless the whole team is on the same level we are certain to be punished in this league.
GLENAVON TEAM : Eoghan Lambert, Thomas Turley, Jake Richardson, Daniel Wilson, Nathan Thompson, Matthew Stevenson, Colum Toland, Daryl King, Matthew Reynolds, Pearse Magee, Ryan McEvoy, Carter Magee, Mark Moran, Michael Corden, Ryan Sullivan, Eoghan Hamill, Jordan Lyttle (absent)
Saturday 3rd October 2009: Glenavon 3-2 Warrenpoint
7th Game of the season saw the Glenavon U14s face Warrenpoint at Gordon Playing fields in very blustery conditions. With a change to a 4-3-3 formation the back line began with Thomas Turley, Jake Richardson, an impressive debut for Jordan Lyttle and Mark Moran supported in midfield by Daryl King, Carter Magee, Pearse Magee, Matthew Reynolds (Capt) and Colum Toland with Eoghan Hamill as the lone striker. With this line up we expected a lot of pressure from the left and right wings in supporting Eoghan plus shots on target from our Midfield trio. Michael Corden was introduced as replacement Goalkeeper after Eoghan Lambert was forced to withdraw through illness.
With Glenavon winning the toss we opted to play with the wind in the first half and hopefully try to punish Warrenpoint. The opening 15 minutes were very cagey from both teams – we were winning a lot of the ball in midfield and clearing any threat in defence but we failed to trouble the Warrenpoint keeper. The only notable shots in this period were struck to the left or over the crossbar by Daryl, Colum and Pearse in Midfield. Our dominance as the game progressed was rewarded on 25 minutes when Colum Toland opened the scoring after some neat passing with Pearse and Mark down the right wing. He managed to dummy the last defender and slot the ball into the right corner past the Warrenpoint Keeper. We finally had the breakthrough which our constant pressure deserved and this was followed just before the half hour mark with Matthew Reynolds (“ Man of the Match” ) striking a wonderful effort from just over the half way line which assisted by the strong wind flew into the net just inches below the cross-bar. Warrenpoint were unlucky not to pull a goal back just before half time when our back line was left exposed but the final strike drifted wide – their only shot in the first half.
The second half started with Eoghan Hamill replacing Daryl on the left wing and Ryan McEvoy introduced to use his pace up front in adding to the score. Against the wind we started very brightly controlling the midfield and defence as we pressed for a third goal. Ryan had several opportunities to increase the lead with his pace beating the last defender but he was unable to make the shot count or the Warrenpoint keeper was quickest to the ball. Luke Adams, Matthew Stevenson and Ryan Sullivan added fresh legs to protect our lead and help the players create further chances in the final twenty minutes. The danger of players pushing forward was shown in the final 10 minutes when we were caught out of position in midfield and on the left wing with Warrenpoint getting a shot from just outside the 18 yard area which Michael could only parry into the roof of the net. The goal turned the game on its head with Warrenpoint more confident and a shell shocked Glenavon side now all over the place in terms of position and tackling. The final few moments were nail-biting for the spectators and coaches as Glenavon gave Warrenpoint too much room and time on the ball as they created an equaliser with Michael beaten at the near post after some sloppy play in defence. With the final whistle about to blow Glenavon looked dead and buried as Warrenpoint produced another attack which Michael managed to break down – he then released a quick ball down the right wing to Ryan Sullivan who slid the ball through to Ryan McEvoy for another one-on-one with the goalkeeper. This somehow ended up with both players entangled outside the six yard area with the ball falling nicely to an opportunistic Eoghan Hamill who grabbed the winner with a simple tap in.
What a relief for the coaches in a game which Glenavon had total control for 95% but credit to the players for showing a fighting spirit and determination right to the end.
GLENAVON TEAM : Thomas Turley, Jake Richardson, Jordan Lyttle, Matthew Stevenson, Colum Toland, Daryl King, Matthew Reynolds, Pearse Magee, Ryan McEvoy, Carter Magee, Mark Moran, Michael Corden, Ryan Sullivan, Eoghan Hamill, Luke Adams, Daniel Wilson (injured), Eoghan Lambert (absent)
