Linfield Game Postponed

Glenavon has received confirmation from the League that the home JJB Sports Premiership game against Linfield, scheduled for Saturday 6th September, has been postponed due to the call-up of Linfield goalkeeper Alan Mannus to the Northern Ireland squad for the World Cup qualifier in Slovakia.

Glenavon had no grounds to appeal against the ruling as Linfield had requested the postponement in line with a rule in the current Premiership handbook.

Glenavon 0-1 Bangor

Newboys Bangor sit proudly on top of the JJB Sports Premiership tonight thanks to a Marty Verner goal five minutes from time. Despite dominating the possession Glenavon could not turn that domination into goals thanks to a combination of poor finishing and excellent goal keeping from Bangor’s young ‘keeper Andrew Plummer.

Stephen McBride welcomed back Willo McDonagh to the team with Garth Scates dropping to the bench and Marty Quinn fielding an unchanged side following Bangor’s dramatic comeback win from 2-0 down on Saturday.

Glenavon fashioned the first two chances of the game in the 6th and 7th minutes with Conor Walsh’s 22 yard shot drawing a good save from Plummer and Tony Grant firing across goal from a tight angle. In the 25th minute McDonagh teed up the ball for himself on the ‘D’ but his volley flashed wide and four minutes later Molloy turned and unleashed a low shot from the corner of the box that Plummer held at the base of the post.

Willo McDonagh had a powerful effort at goal in the first half.

Willo McDonagh had a powerful effort at goal in the first half.

Molloy went close again in the 33rd minute after Grant crossed from the left and his strike partner flicked the ball narrowly wide at the near post.

Bangor’s only effort of the first half didn’t arrive until stoppage time when a Nathan McConnell volley flew over the bar after Cleary’s throw in was headed on for him.

Tony Grant found no way round the Bangor defence. With just two minutes of the second half gone Verner’s free kick was pushed over the bar by Robinson. Carville’s run in the 54th minute allowed him to pick out Grant and, although he seemed to miss-control the ball, the break favoured McDonagh. He unleashed a shot from around the penalty spot but the young Bangor keeper pulled off a fantastic save to keep out his well-struck effort.

Molloy was denied by a vital clearance at the back post by Cleary as the Bangor fullback put Turkington’s dangerous cross out for a corner in the 67th minute.

As full time approached Verner had a chance to grab the points when the ball dropped to him 8 yards but he blasted high over Robinson’s bar but the former Glenavon striker was on the spot to toe-poke the ball under Robinson when Hudson’s tackle on Anderson turned into a low cross which caught the Glenavon defence out giving the Seagulls the win despite Glenavon’s dominance of the possession.
