Wish Granted!

Yes, he’s back! Tony Grant has returned to Mourneview Park as Glenavon completes a seventh signing ahead of the inaugural Irish FA Premiership season.

Tony Grant with club directors.

Wish Granted!

Grant made an immediate impact in his first spell with the Club when he initially came on loan from Preston North End at the start of the 1996-1997 season before making the move permanent in January 1997. His winning goal against Cliftonville in the Irish Cup Final that year sealed his place in the hearts of the Glenavon fans. “It was unbelievable playing at Windsor Park in front of a big crowd and to win the Irish Cup in my first season in the Irish League and then to play in Europe and score against Legia Warsaw was a dream come true” said Tony at Mourneview Park tonight, a place he regards with great affection.

“I’ve always felt a great affinity for this Club and the people here and I think I played some of the best football of my career with Glenavon. I had the opportunity to stay with Drogheda or to move to other Eircom league sides but I wanted to come back to Glenavon as, with the ambition shown by the new board and the management team, the Club is definitely going in the right direction and I’m sure I can make an impact here. Stevie and Alan have put together a good squad that will challenge and hopefully push on in the new League and be challenging at the top end.

“I was pretty young when I was first at the Club but I’ve gained a lot of experience since, playing games in Europe and with some of the top Eircom League sides, Shamrock Rovers, Bohemians and Drogheda. The Drogs have 26 full time professionals and it’s a very competitive setup. I’ve always been dedicated and disciplined and determined to be the best that I could be. Glenavon gave me the chance in 1996 and I grabbed it with both hands. I may not be a prolific goal scorer but I can also create chances for others. I’m fit and I feel there’s another good 3 or 4 years in me and I can’t wait to get started!

Tony is married to his childhood sweetheart and has three daughters, the youngest only seven weeks old.

New Striker Signed

Filed under: First Team — admin @ 10:23 pm

Gary LiggettGlenavon has completed the sixth signing ahead of the new season by securing the services of ex-Portadown striker Gary Liggett.

Local lad Gary, who lives just around the corner from Mourneview Park, has just finished his first year at University where he is studying Marketing. The 20 year-old was a member of Glenavon’s treble-winning Under 16 squad that went through the whole 2003-2004 season unbeaten, winning the League and two Cup competitions, thanks in no small measure to Gary’s fantastic 31 goal haul in a season that also saw him attract attention at the Milk Cup.

He then moved across to Scottish football with Falkirk before returning to the Irish League with Portadown in 2005. He represented NI Schools at Under 18 and he has also played for NI at Under 19 level.

“I’ve supported Glenavon from I was a youngster and I’ve always wanted the chance to come back here again.” Gary enthused. “Stevie McBride spoke to me and I was very interested to hear what he had to say. Talking to him and Adrian Teer convinced me to come here. Glenavon’s a Club on the up, with great potential and I’d love to win things here.

“I’m aiming to get myself established in the squad and then push on and see what we can do. It was hard to nail down a regular place in the Portadown team last season even though my goals ratio was quite good but I just didn’t get the opportunities that I needed. I felt it was time to move on and try to establish myself in an Irish League Club and Glenavon is the best chance for me to do that.”

Glenavon will be completing the signing of another striker tomorrow to bring the total of new signings to seven.

Contrary to recent media reports, Glenavon did agree a deal with Limavady United for right back Ryan Mullan and had also agreed personal terms with the youngster but he had a change of heart, citing issues with travelling and, rather than have a player who was not fully committed to the Club, the Management team decided not to proceed with the deal.

Glenavon Sign Right Back

Head Coach Stephen McBride welcomes Niall Hudson to Mourneview Park

Glenavon has completed the signing of right back Niall Hudson who has just come out of contract with Newry City. He will be re-joining his former City team mate, goal keeper Robert Robinson who also recently joined Glenavon.

Hudson is a 26 year old Dubliner who spent the last two seasons with the County Down side, playing 30 games and scoring one goal last season. Earlier in his career he spent eight years in England where he played for Nottingham Forest, Halifax Town and Doncaster Rovers.

Speaking to glenavonfc.com, Niall said “I’m really looking forward to getting started. Being off for the last two months I can’t wait to get back into it. It’s always excting to join a new club and join up with the new players and playing under a new manager. Speaking to Stevie, he’s ambitious and wanting to do well and I’m looking forward to joining up with the guys when training starts next week.

“I’ve always enjoyed playing here at Mourneview as the pitch is a lovely pitch to play on and the stadium is top notch as well.
