Under 16 Team to Play in San Marino

Glenavon FC has accepted an invitation to send an Under 16 team to a prestigious Youth tournament in San Marino in July for one week alongside big names like Nottingham Forest, Wolves, West Brom, and Malmo from Sweden.

The Glenavon Academy will be taking a squad of 22 players and 8 staff under the management of John McDowell. These are the young players who will move to the senior set up in the Under 18 squad for next season.

The Beautiful Game will once again be supplying the Glenavon Home and Away kits for the 2013/14 Season. The kits will be produced by Nike and the designs, pictured below, were chosen by the Glenavon coaching staff. Details of when replicas can be purchased will be announced ASAP.

Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of Shareholders and Members of Glenavon Football & Athletic Club Ltd will be held on Monday 10th June at 7.00 pm in the Bedeck Suite, Mourneview Park.

Nominations for the Board of Directors for the 2013/14 year should be received by Harry Cherry, Company Secretary, not later than Friday 7 June 2013

Bedeck Open for FA Cup Final

Unfortunately the ‘Kings of Mourneview’ competition, due to take place on Saturday, has been cancelled due to lack of support but the Bedeck Suite will be open for Sports Club members and supporters from 2 pm on Saturday, FA Cup Final day. Several of the players will be coming up to watch the Final so why not come along and watch the game too?

‘Winkie’ Murphy Signs for Glenavon

Gary Hamilton has moved to fill the gap at the heart of his defence created by the departure of Mark Haughey by signing the man he will replace at Linfield, William ‘Winkie’ Murphy, on a one year deal.

“Winkie played over 40 times for Linfield last season, which shows he has kept himself fit and he himself felt that he had another good season in him after David Jeffrey declined to offer him a contract extension” Gary explained. “He has that winning mentality that we are looking for in the squad and he will be a great asset in terms of working with and giving his knowledge and experience to the younger players but also he’ll be a big help to the coaching staff and a great character in the changing room. Like Davy Rainey, at no point in our talks was money a factor, they both just want to play football and that’s exactly the attitude we need.”

Gary also mentioned that he is in talks with a midfielder and hopes to hear a positive response from him early next week.

Farren Wins Monthly Award

Congratulations to striker Mark Farren who has won the Irish Premiership player of the month award after scoring five goals for Glenavon in April. He scored against Dungannon Swifts, Lisburn Distillery (2), Portadown and Ballymena United.

Farren said he hoped to come back fitter and stronger in August and help Glenavon finish higher in the table. “I have not done a proper pre-season in three seasons,” Farren told BBC Sport. “so I am still only playing at about 50% of what I am capable of. During summer the aim is to build myself back up.

“Glenavon are a great club. It was exactly what I needed after leaving Derry – a club where I could find myself again and get back into the scoring habit.”

Glenavon FC is pleased to announce the signing of Republic of Ireland junior and amateur international winger ADAM FOLEY on a 1 year amateur contract. Adam impressed Gary Hamilton when he played for Tony Grant’s Glebe North side against Glenavon in a pre-season game last August.

Adam who, like Tony Grant, comes from Balbriggan in Dublin, is 23 years old and 6′ 2″ tall and can play on either wing. He’s looking forward to a “flat-out pre-season” with his new Club.

Just today Gary has signed striker David Rainey, who was released by Crusaders at the end of the season, on a one year deal and Portadown’s Mark Patton, a left winger, has also signed a one year deal with Glenavon. “As everyone knows I’ve been crying out for wingers and Mark and Adam will hopefully do a good job for us. David gives us another striking option and meanwhile I’m still looking for a centre half and a central midfielder,” Gary told us on Wednesday afternoon.
